About us

We build program management on behavioral science.

Principia Mentis builds ChangeMaker® – the program management platform that treats human motivation as an engineering discipline, not an afterthought. Based in Munich, in use at corporations, upper mid-market companies, private equity portfolios, and global consultancies.

€8B+ EBITDA under management
20,000+ initiatives steered
100+ transformations delivered

Motivation is not a soft factor. It can be engineered.

Programs rarely fail at the plan – they fail in execution, when people are asked to carry change they didn't build. That is exactly where ChangeMaker® starts: every feature of the platform rests on a specific behavioral-science effect – mere exposure, the IKEA effect, self-efficacy, coopetition. We don't drape a change framework over a generic PM tool; the platform itself is the behavioral mechanism.

The standard behind it: you don't have to memorize any of this. The science lives in the product – in templates, behavioral design, and customizing that is included in the license. Your team starts with its program, not with a methodology course.

Dr. Alexander Ploghaus, founder of Principia Mentis – portrait

Dr. Alexander Ploghaus

Alexander Ploghaus studied at the universities of Oxford and Harvard how the brain learns and decides under threat and uncertainty. His work on reinforcement learning – today a foundation of modern AI – was published in Science and profiled in the New York Times.

As a leadership member of McKinsey & Company's European automotive and organization sector, he designed transformations in high tech, automotive, and chemicals. ChangeMaker® grew out of that double practice: embedding the knowledge of what sets people in motion directly into the software that steers programs.

From Oxford neuroscience to 100+ transformations.

1996–2003

Neuroscience

Co-founder Dr. Alexander Ploghaus discovers that the human brain operates similarly to AI reinforcement learning. Research positions at Oxford and Harvard, publications in Science and other high-impact journals, global media coverage.

2003–2010

Management consulting

70% of change projects fail to reach their targets. Alexander examines the underlying causes and develops solutions while in the leadership of McKinsey's European automotive and organization sectors.

2011

Founders' paths cross

Co-founders Sebastian Schwaiger and Mario Roser live in the same student dorm, while Alexander supervises Mario's thesis on M&A. Sebastian is an IBM scholar studying computer science; Mario is a Germany National Scholarship recipient in industrial engineering.

2012

Principia Mentis founded

Alexander, Sebastian and Mario formally found the firm. The name – evocative of Newton's main work – reveals the approach: turning the design principles of the human mind (Latin: principia mentis) into software design principles.

2012–2013

Full stack and service power

Mario Kesseler, Daniel von Bechen and Felipe Pahlke join. Mario – industrial engineer – builds consulting activities and international design patent protection. Daniel leads ChangeMaker frontend. Felipe, a mathematician, drives the data layer.

2013

First movers: Tech Mittelstand

Customer #1: Hoppecke Industry Batteries. Later that year ZEISS starts using ChangeMaker for productivity programs, and a national government commits all its policy initiatives to the platform.

2014

Consulting partnerships

Management consultancies start using ChangeMaker with their clients to boost collaboration and ensure post-engagement success. A growing number replace the usual tool zoo with ChangeMaker to increase project impact and efficiency.

2015

Deep expertise

Dr. Florian Finck – philosopher and mathematician with long-standing strategy-consulting experience – boosts Principia Mentis' depth in business transformation and other consulting formats.

2016

Principia Mentis goes corporate

Bayer/Covestro, Deutsche Bahn, Infineon, Philips, and other leading European multinationals choose ChangeMaker for high-impact corporate transformation and innovation programs.

2017

Principia Mentis goes global

Top-tier global consulting partners begin worldwide deployment of ChangeMaker for their projects. Infrastructure expands for fast service across all geographies.

2018

Team and office expansion

Munich office expands as the team grows. Darren Crossley leads the GUI design of the next-generation ChangeMaker; Mats Weinand drives the media work that rounds out the user experience.

2019

ChangeMaker PHOENIX

Seven years of market experience, consulting methodology, and scientific findings converge into designated templates per management-project type. The first template – for initiative programs – rolls out with the PHOENIX edition.

2020

Defining the next horizon

The biggest project since foundation begins: ChangeMaker FIVE. A completely new tech stack optimized for scalability, security, and performance. Meanwhile, supply-chain-risk programs become a stable companion through COVID.

2021

ChangeMaker FIVE on speed

Design and development capacity nearly triples to digest input from pilot customers and consulting partners. Andreas Bergmaier invents the Facet – a milestone enabling management-ready answers from the data cube. OKRs rise in popularity and integrate natively.

2022

A FIVE is born

ChangeMaker FIVE: released. New web application, mobile app, Excel plugin, MS Teams integration. Three new data scientists push the AI platform that extracts best practices to further enhance ChangeMaker impact.

2023–present

Scale and science

100+ transformations delivered, more than €8bn in financial impact under management. A 21-person team in Munich. The platform continues to evolve on behavioural-science-first principles – every feature traceable to a published effect.

Behavioral scientists, transformation practitioners, software engineers.

21 people working out of Munich – between the Eisbach and the Isar. Three disciplines, one product:

Behavioral research

Translates effects from neuroscience and behavioral science into product mechanics – from reporting rhythms to task design.

Transformation practice

Consultants who have steered restructurings, carve-outs, and growth programs themselves – and who guide client programs through customizing.

Software engineering

Builds the platform that carries both: PerformanceMap®, FocusReports, WorkBench – configured fast instead of implemented forever.

Dr. Mario Kesseler

Head of Consulting Industrial engineering

An exciting journey that fuels both personal and professional growth. Our team thrives on a culture of innovation, collaboration, and mutual respect – an ideal environment to learn, contribute, and improve.
